Cuyabeno Lodge

About Cuyabeno Lodge
Important Information

The Cuyabeno Lodge is located within the Cuyabeno Reserve, itself established in 1979 and covering over 600,000 hectares (1.5 million acres) of primary rainforest in the northeastern part of the Ecuadorian Amazon around the Cuyabeno River.

Accessible from the town of Lago Agrio, the reserve has become an important tourist destination over the years because of its amazing wildlife diversity, which includes eight species of monkeys and well over 500 types of birds.

When the Cuyabeno Lodge began operating in 1988, the owners believed that rainforest travelers should be accommodated in conditions that would be both in harmony with the surrounding environment and attuned to the needs of the modern visitor.

The lodge is certified by the Rainforest Alliance for its sustainable tourism practices and for its accommodations built using local materials. The lodge works closely with the Siona people, a local indigenous community whose members provide canoe transportation.

The rainy season here is from mid-March to August, when river dolphins and manatees can be seen. The dry season extends from December to early March, sometimes leading to a dry lake – which means the lodge is only accessible on foot.

Location: The Cuyabeno Lodge is found in Sucumbíos Province, in the north-eastern part of the Ecuadorian Amazon. The lodge is situated on a peninsula on Cuyabeno Lake within the Cuyabeno National Park.

Getting there involves a 30-minute flight from Quito to the town of Largo Agrio, where the traveler will be met by the lodge’s bus. A two-hour drive will take you to the Cuyabeno River bridge for a box lunch at a restaurant, after which time you’ll continue on a scenic river journey (approximately 2-3 hours in the wet season, longer in the dry season) by motorized canoe to reach the lodge in the afternoon.

Accommodations:

Scattered throughout the grounds are seven detached thatched-roof wooden cabins, each sleeping two people in double or twin beds. Three “Superior Rooms” are located in the observation tower, affording spectacular views over the forest canopy. All rooms have a balcony or terrace, in addition to private bathrooms with hot showers.
